Construction

The changes in construction in the coming years are most related to technological developments, the digitisation of building information, tightening requirements and the movement of construction towards industrial production and standardisation of construction products. Construction is sensitive to fluctuations in the economy.

In the future, the number of construction jobs will remain the same as a whole, but the number of engineers, building automation technicians and locksmiths may increase due to tightening requirements. There is also an increase in the number of positions of work leaders due to the introduction of model design and higher requirements for the quality of buildings. However, the number of jobs of finishers will decrease slightly, as the content of the work changes due to industrial production and the use of standard solutions.

In construction as a whole, the need for new workforce is about 880 people per year, which is higher than the number of graduates. In the future, there will not be enough graduates of engineering specialties working as a work, project or object manager. Due to the increasing complexity of the technical systems of the building, there is a lack of heating, ventilation and cooling engineers and water supply and sewerage engineers for whom it is not currently possible to study at the level of professional higher education.

The number of graduates of construction specialties in vocational education is not sufficient to fill the positions of skilled workers. Construction workers, locksmiths and construction smelters of waterworks and utility systems of the building are particularly lacking. Only painters are trained more than the labour needs.

In the case of geodetics, the number of graduates corresponds to the number of jobs, but employers tend to feel the shortage of workers with higher professional skills. The number of graduates in architecture, landscape architecture and interior architecture statistically exceeds the need for labour. However, in the case of planners, there is a lack of employees with very good planning skills.

The prerequisite for working as managers and specialists in construction is professional or higher education, continuous professional development and work experience. Skilled workers are expected to receive professional education, further professional training or work experience.

Information is based on the OSKA Construction Workforce and Skills Survey, which projected employment in the field until 2024.
