Housing, catering and tourism are affected by the overall economic well-being, the number of tourists, seasonality and the difference between regions. There are many young people working in the field, especially in service. Short-term contracts, including work amps and part-time work, are common. In several occupations of accommodation and catering, for example, bartender, waiter, catering customer service officer and room servant can work without professional training, possessing appropriate attitudes, general skills and a desire to serve and learn. They are therefore suitable for young people as first jobs. The largest number of employees in the field of catering is simple workers, room servants, waiters, cooks and managers of catering establishments.
In the future, the number of jobs in accommodation, catering and tourism will increase slightly. At the same time, the sector suffered a major setback from the COVID-19 restrictions, which may cause the increase in the number of accommodation and tourism jobs to suffer. In catering, more chefs are needed, as there is an increasing desire for different food experiences, ready-made food is purchased and food is ordered for the home. The need for simple food service workers, such as dishwashers and assistant chefs, will decrease somewhat in the future.
Although graduates with professional education are divided, they do not always go to work in accommodation, catering and tourism companies. In addition, service and regular employees stay in enterprises for a short period of time or leave for foreign countries. Businesses are particularly lacking in chefs, waiters, administrators and simple-workers, as it is more difficult to find employees in lower-wage occupations. There is a growing recruitment of foreign workers to fill jobs, especially in catering.
In the future, there will also be no graduates of catering management and chef's specialties, as there is currently no possibility to study these professions for free in professional higher education. Travel consultants are also trained less if there is a future workforce need.
Information is based on the OSKA survey of accommodation, catering and tourism workforce and skills, which forecast sector employment until 2025.
